(Part of the series "Folds II")
Direct exposure on folded analogue
photo paper, sizes variable, unique pieces (selection)
In the “Folds II” series, Djourina expands the analogue pictorial space with a three-dimensional component: the irregularly rectangular photographic paper is folded, bent and/or creased before the different exposure phases. The resulting surface plasticity influences the formal composition of the works in a variety of layers, in which the edges on the one hand separate sharp colourful spaces from one another, but also become the subject of depiction themselves.
The physicality of the paper, translucent to a certain extent, breaks the light and casts its own shadows on itself, which vary from diffuse to sharp-edged impressions, depending on the position and intensity of exposure.
The overlapping of these different light influences creates structures that transfer their graphic appearance to the surrounding space through the broken outer contours, appearing flat and geometric from one perspective, plastic and painterly from the other.
